  19.  
  20. A few words about the Eicar Standard AntiVirus Test File:
  21.  
  22. The Eicar Standard AntiVirus Test File is a combined effort by 
  23. antivirus vendors throughout the world to come up with one 
  24. standard by which customers can verify their antivirus installations.
  25.  
  26. To test your installation, you would copy the following line into its
  27. own file and name it EICAR.COM.
  28.  
  29. X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
  30.  
  31. When done, you will have a 69 or 70 byte file.
  32.  
  33. When VirusScan is applied to this file, SCAN will report finding the
  34. EICAR-STANDARD-AV-TEST-FILE virus.
  35.  
  36. It is very important to know that THIS IS NOT A VIRUS!  However,
  37. users often have the need to test that their installations function
  38. correctly.  The antivirus industry, through the European Institute
  39. for Computer Antivirus Research, has adopted this standard to 
  40. facilitate this need.
  41.  
  42. Please delete the file when installation testing is completed so 
  43. unsuspecting users are not unnecessarily alarmed.

  46.  
  47. The next DAT update is scheduled for July with another in Sep.
  48. Intermediate "emergency" updates will be available only through the BBS.

  51. Known Issues
  52.  
  53. When a macro virus is detected, a message reading "No remover currently 
  54. available for this virus." will be displayed. Please disregard the 
  55. message and clean the file using the /CLEAN option.
  56.  
  57. When a macro virus is detected in conjunction with other viruses, the
  58. macro virus remover will not work.  We are still working on this.  If
  59. you encounter this, you can remove the other virus first or work in
  60. a separate area.

  63. Additional Known Issues
  64.  
  65. -     Virus Scan NT will scan the PAGEFILE.SYS, which will cause the system
  66.     to beep. An Access Denied message will result.
  67. -     Virus Scan NT will not be able to access the boot sectors and the
  68.     Master Boot Record unless you have administrative rights.  This
  69.     is due to a security feature in Windows NT.  You need to log in
  70.     as a user with administrative rights to scan the master boot
  71.     record and boot sectors. You may also need the DOS version of Scan 
  72.     if your system has a Boot Sector Virus.
